A Simple Monthly Budget Reset
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This costs you nothing extra.
You do not need a complicated system to keep a budget. A short monthly reset, done at the same time each month, goes a long way. This is general information and not financial advice, so adjust it to your own situation.
Step one: look back
Review last month's spending. Where did the money actually go? Be honest and curious, not harsh. The goal is information, not guilt.
Step two: list your fixed costs
Write down what is the same every month: rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, subscriptions and loan payments. These come first.
Step three: set flexible categories
Choose amounts for groceries, gas, household items, fun and gifts. Base them on what you really spent last month, then adjust.
Step four: plan for the irregular
Annual costs and holidays sneak up on people. Divide them by twelve and set that amount aside each month.
Step five: pay yourself first
Decide how much goes to savings before you spend on extras. Even a small amount builds the habit.
Step six: check in weekly
Take five minutes each week to compare your spending to the plan. Small adjustments are easier than big corrections at the end of the month.
Cut what you do not use
Look through subscriptions and recurring charges. Cancel anything you have forgotten about.
