Habit Tracking for Beginners: Start With Three

A habit tracker is just a page where you check off what you did. It works because seeing your progress is motivating, and it takes about ten seconds a day.

Start with only three habits

Trying to change everything at once usually ends with changing nothing. Pick three habits you care about, like drinking water, a short walk or reading before bed.

Make each habit tiny

Shrink the habit until it is almost too easy. Read one page. Stretch for one minute. Once it is automatic, you can do more.

Attach it to something you already do

Link the new habit to an existing routine. After you pour your coffee, read one page. This is called habit stacking, and it helps the new habit stick.

Track it where you will see it

Put the tracker on the fridge, your desk or in your planner. If you cannot see it, you will forget it.

Do not break the chain twice

Missing one day is normal. The goal is to never miss two days in a row. Pick it back up the next day, no guilt required.

Review at the end of the month

Look at the page. Which habits stuck? Which did not? Drop what is not working and add something new.

Celebrate the streaks

A full row of checkmarks feels good. Reward yourself when you hit a milestone.

The Habit Tracker in my shop includes monthly trackers plus mood, sleep and water pages, and you can fill it in on screen or print it.

Handy extras: reward stickers and a dry erase calendar.
