How to Choose a Word of the Year for 2027

A word of the year is a gentler alternative to a long list of resolutions. Instead of ten goals you will forget by February, you pick one word and let it quietly shape your decisions all year.

Start by looking back

Before you choose anything, think about the year behind you. What gave you energy? What drained you? What did you wish you had more of? Your word often hides in those answers.

Try on a handful of words

Write down ten to thirty words that appeal to you. Peace, courage, trust, simple, grow, rest, focus, joy. Read through them slowly and circle the ones that make you feel something, either relief or a little nudge.

Narrow it to three

Pick your top three and ask a few questions of each:

  • What would this word look like in my daily life?
  • What would I say yes to, and what would I say no to?
  • Does it feel like an invitation or a burden?

Choose one and give it a home

Write your word somewhere you will see it: the fridge, a mirror, the front of your planner. Many people add a favorite verse or quote beside it to keep the meaning close.

Check in along the way

Set a reminder to revisit your word each quarter. Ask how it showed up and what you want to carry into the next few months.

Do it on paper

The Word of the Year Workbook in my shop walks you through all of this, with a list of thirty words to try on, space to narrow it down, and check ins for the whole year. It is a fillable PDF you can type into or print.

Handy supplies: colored fine tip pens, sticker letters for your word and a small frame for your word.
