A 31 Day Declutter Challenge for January

Decluttering feels huge when you picture the whole house. It feels easy when you only have to deal with one drawer. That is the idea behind a daily challenge: one small spot, ten to fifteen minutes, every day for a month.

How it works

Each day you tackle one small area. Set a timer, empty the space, keep what belongs and let go of the rest. Then stop. The small size is what keeps people going.

A sample week

  • Day 1: The junk drawer.
  • Day 2: Kitchen counters.
  • Day 3: The spice rack.
  • Day 4: The fridge shelves.
  • Day 5: Pantry snacks and expired items.
  • Day 6: Mugs, cups and water bottles.
  • Day 7: Take a break and enjoy the progress.

Make letting go easier

Keep a donation bag handy. If you hesitate over an item, ask whether you have used it this year or whether it is useful or truly special. If not, it can go.

Skip the sentimental items at first

Save photos and keepsakes for later. Early wins build confidence, and those harder items will be easier once your home feels lighter.

Mark your progress

Checking off each day gives a real sense of momentum. Some people take a before and after photo of one space each week.
